Top Ten Tuesday: Books On My Fall TBR

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly linkup of book bloggers hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl! This week, we're revealing our fall to-be-read lists! Here are the next ten books that are up for me on my schedule (as always, there will be book club books that get added into the lineup).

Ready Player One: There was the hype. Then there was the backlash. So I'm going into this expecting something more enjoyable than not, but not anything extraordinary.

The Things They Carried: I've read a lot of books rooted in World War II, but I haven't actually read much literature based on the Vietnam War and this is a classic.

Flip: I think I found this on a list of underrated YA novels, and then found it on sale for the Kindle.

The Library Book: I am really excited for Susan Orlean's look at a historic library fire, and libraries in general!

Prep: I've never read Curtis Sittenfeld before, and I have a soft spot for coming-of-age stories, so this seems like a good place to start.

We Are Not Ourselves: This book got a bunch of praise a few years back, and a family drama does tend to appeal to me.

Detroit: An American Autopsy: The rise and fall and rebirth of Detroit is in my blood (my mom is a native Detroiter and I actually lived there for the first couple years of my life) so I'm always interested in reading about the city.

Bringing Down The House: They made this into a movie, which I never saw, but the real life tale of a bunch of nerds fleecing Vegas sounds entertaining!

Seduction: Karina Longworth's podcast is one of my very favorites so I am really looking forward to reading her book about Howard Hughes' Hollywood story.

In Defense Of Food: Michael Pollan has some bad takes, but I've always been interested in reading a book of his to get more of a sense of his work.

  1. I liked FLIPPED. I haven't seen it on too many lists over the years. Hope you enjoy it. I read these lists and I start to panic. There are so many books out there that I haven't even heard of and now I want to look into them. But my TBR is already over 100 books long. If I just read them it would take me over a year to finish the list without adding new titles (which I do all the time.) Eek! My Fall TBR list

    1. My TBR is out of control crazy for the same reason...there's so much out there to read that it just keeps growing! I'm glad to hear the positive words on Flip, I can't for the life of me remember exactly where I saw it recommended, just that I did!

  2. Ready Player One is an excellent book and I saw the movie after I had forgotten much of the detail in the book so I didn't get bent out of shape like so many did. I think you will like it. I am a big fan of Susan Orlean: The Orchid Thief and Rin Tin Tin, but hadn't heard about this one. I will have to check it out since I am a serious library fan.

    1. I read the Orchid Thief in high school after seeing Adaptation and remember liking but not loving it, but I think I might just have been too young to really get it? I do love libraries, so I think The Library Book will be perfect to re-introduce me to Orlean!

  3. Honestly, I enjoyed reading Ready Player One a couple of years ago, but also totally understand the backlash in regards to the movie. I think it's a good time, provided you don't overthink! :) And man, The Things They Carried is brutal. Get ready for a hard read for that one.

    1. Haven't seen the movie, but heard the book is fun, so I'm looking forward to it! I've heard The Things They Carried is hard, but so many people absolutely love it that hopefully it'll be worth it!

  5. I LOVED In Defense of Food...totally changed the way I ate. Such simple guidelines too.
And I remember not thinking Prep was all that back when I read it, but I loved Sittenfeld's short stories this year so wonder if I'd love Prep if I read it now...
And...We Are Not Ourselves is a tough read emotionally. Read it a few years back. Liked it then but doubt I'd be that patient with it now.

    1. We Are Not Ourselves will be my like 4th or 5th 500+ pager in the last several months! Thanks for the heads up that it'll give me feelings. I'm honestly surprised I haven't gotten to any Sittenfeld yet (I'm waiting for the story collection to come out in paperback and intend to read it then), but Prep seems like the kind of thing I'd like so I'm looking forward to it!

  6. The Things They Carried is excellent, and Ready Player One is a fun read. I personally didn't care for Prep, but most people love it. I'll be interested to hear what you think. Happy fall reading!

    1. I was actually born and lived until I was three in Detroit proper, but grew up about an hour away. It's a wonderful city and I'm really looking forward to reading the book!

  9. I've been curious about In Defense of Food for a while, but just haven't ever gotten to it. I really should. And as a Michigan resident I'm definitely interested in the Detrot book as well- I've heard good things on that one.
